As the weather gets nicer outside, I've been starting to think a lot about hooping in the sunshine...I can't wait until it is finally warm enough! In anticipation of much fun to come, I thought it might be a good idea to open up another channel for communication about where and when you will be hooping this spring. I know Tribe already serves this purpose, but I also recognize that a lot of people use Facebook to communicate as well, so why not have a group there too?

So last Friday, 08/08/08 was World Hoop Day. Our intention was to meet and celebrate this occasion, but it RAINED and RAINED and didn't stop. We didn't get to hoop :( So we decided to try again & celebrate World Hoop Day THIS Friday, 08/15/08. The numbers don't align, but hopefully the weather will!

To commemorate this fabulous occasion, hoopers will be gathering & jamming & having a hoop parade. *It is critical that this gathering/parade be viewed in a renegade fashion ~ ie: you all just "randomly decided" to come out & hoop at these places, but THERE IS NO ONE WHO ORGANIZED THIS EVENT. This way, no one will get in trouble* :) Here are the details:

WHO: HOOPERS

WHAT: WORLD HOOP DAY CELEBRATION - TAKE 2

WHERE: MEET ON THE GRASS IN FRONT OF CAMBRIDGE CITY HALL IN CENTRAL SQUARE ~ WE WILL WAIT FOR 10 MINUTES OR SO & THEN BEGIN A MARCH TO HARVARD SQUARE & THE CAMBRIDGE COMMON

WHEN: FRIDAY AUGUST 15TH, 2008 @ 8PM

WHY: BECAUSE WE LOVE HOOPING!

HOW: WE ARE GOING TO ROCK OUT WITH AS MANY HOOPS, HOOPERS, COSTUMES, BOOMBOXES & FUN THAT WE CAN MUSTER.

WHAT: WORLD HOOP DAY CELEBRATION

WHERE: MEET ON THE GRASS IN FRONT OF CAMBRIDGE CITY HALL IN CENTRAL SQUARE ~ WE WILL WAIT FOR 10 MINUTES OR SO & THEN BEGIN A MARCH TO HARVARD SQUARE & THE CAMBRIDGE COMMON

WHEN: FRIDAY AUGUST 8TH, 2008 (08/08/08) @ 8PM

WHY: BECAUSE WE LOVE HOOPING!

HOW: WE ARE GOING TO ROCK OUT WITH AS MANY HOOPS, HOOPERS, COSTUMES, BOOMBOXES & FUN THAT WE CAN MUSTER.

I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend & I will connect with many of you soon. Please come
You are invited, and everyone else is too for that matter, to a hoop/spin/frisbee/acro/dancing/rollin-around-in-the-grass/picnic birthday party!

What? Bring some food for picnic fun, if you want to bring stuff to share that's cool, but I hadn't totally planned for that so make sure to bring some utensils and receptacles. OF COURSE!!! Bring your hoops and poi and staffs and such! I have my little mini radio cd player, but if you have one with more Oomph please let me know and bring it along.

When: Sunday the 27th @ noon... until I get bored and want ice cream!

Where: the Arnold Arboretum... Behind the bonsai garden to be specific. Which is near the entrance on the arborway, and the first entrance on Center st. (It's closest to the potty)
(i'm hoping that field will be free... if not I will find somewhere in the general vicinity... still close to the potty)

Why: Cause I'm an old lady!

How: The arboretum is T accessible.. I believe it's Forest hills Orange line. There is plenty of street parking too. If carpooling is needed Commence the discussion now.
Also Tomorrow, the Boston Globe's article on Hooping is supposed to come out in the "Living Arts" section. When I last spoke to the editor a few days ago, he said he was 95% sure it's coming out Saturday ~ so keep your eyes peeled b/c I might not have a chance to write you until after the Festival.

It's like carrying around a giant slinky or something. I am in a kind of rough part of Boston right now, and have had sweet little Latino gangsters (who wouldn't normally give me the time of day) ask if they could try it out. And they did, and rocked. It was a really cool kind of bonding.
I just had a fellow at a shop just now get all psyched about it, and bemoan the fact that mine doesn't have "shoop shoop" beads in it. And people just smile like hell. Plus, apparently, because my Spanish is not that good, "hula hoop" is hula hoop in any language!
And I had it in my car, and stopped at a convenience store. The owner of the store saw it and told me he was one of the MA state champion hoopers in the 50s. He was really nostalgic and sweet.
This is joy.

Okay, so I know this is one of a million posts...

I am new to Central Vermont. I just moved into the Rutland area after living in Western MA, where
there are plenty of other hoopers, poi spinners, you name it. So far, the few times I've pulled out a
hoop or poi around here I get weird looks.

So... I'm actually speaking to a group in Central VT about the performing arts, and opportunities to
publically perform, or just perform in a public setting. For hoopers, jugglers, poi spinners, and well
that's the kind of art I will be mentioning. I think it might be easier with some community support.

(if you haven't heard of this, some friends of mine get permission every summer from parks & recreation to play swing music and have a free outdoor dance right in front of the church. it's awesome.)

anyway... i'm bringing a couple of hoops with me for my friends to try, and wanted to give you the heads-up in case any of you are looking for something to do next sunday! the music will be from 1-4pm, i'll probably be there from 1-3 because i have to drive right back to philly from there. :( i'll be the 5' tall redhead hooping on the lawn. :)

HOOPERS - COME TO BU!

Throughout the summer, we'll be spinning poi, hoops, whips, staffs, etc at Boston University on Monday nights from 6:30 - 8:30 ish at 855 Commonwealth Avenue (this is the BU Arts Building across from the BU West Green line B branch stop). This is an indoor practice, so there is no fire. It is free.

You can park on Commonwealth Avenue (meters aren't in effect after 6pm) or take the green line to BU West (but make sure you take the B branch of the green line, as it is the only one that goes to this stop).

Good times! When you enter the building at 855 Commonwealth Avenue, go to your left, and walk up the short flight of stairs. You'll see elevators in front of you. Take a left and walk straight. Then, take your first right. We'll be in room 105 or 109, which are on the right. If we're not there, also check room 106, and take the elevator to the 3rd floor and check there.

Look forward to seeing you!!!!

Hey New England Hoopers!

For the first time ever, Christabel will be hosting a HoopGirl teacher training workshop on the East Coast. In addition, her live trainings have been drastically cut down for 2008. By 2009, most of the HoopGirl teacher training programs will be distance learning packages. In other words, this is the first time (and quite possibly the last time) you'll have an opportunity to train with Christabel in person, on the East Coast.

The 3-day event will take place June 20-22 in St. Petersburg, Florida at the Roberts Recreation Center (located at 1246 50th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL 33703). For those unfamiliar, St. Pete is located just outside of Tampa. And if you can't make the Tampa training, here is the full 08 calendar for Level 1 Teacher Training:

May 30-Jun 1 Santa Barbara

June 20-22 Tampa, FL

July 30-Aug 1 Birmingham, UK

Sept 12-14 San Francisco, CA

Oct 10-12 Louiseville, KY

BACKGROUND:
The program is spread over three days, for a total of 24 hours of hoopdance instructor training. It's intended for those seeking a career as entrepreneurs teaching hooping as a mind-body, athletic dance form. Teaching is taught as a transformational practice of personal growth and empowerment. Graduates have the option to license as official HoopGirlWorkout™. In other words, this is an awesome opportunity for you to become certified and spread the hoop love in your own city by teaching hooping classes.

So, if you have wanted to become a certified HoopGirl instructor, now is your chance! Check out hoopgirl.com for more information and for registration details. Be sure to click on the 'Teacher Training' tab and then 'Certified Hoop Dance Program' to register.

If you decide on the Tampa/ St. Pete area training and have any questions about where to stay, what to do, etc., just let me know. I would be happy to provide you with recommendations.

HOOPERS – COME ONE, COME ALL AND HOOP INDOORS (and perhaps learn other fun skills too!) at BOSTON UNIVERSITY (BU)

***WHERE: The Sargent Activities Center of Boston University (located at 1 University Road in Boston). This is the place where the Monday night practices will be held for poi spinners, hoopers, and other folks interested in object manipulation / dancing / being fun and a bit odd. It is an official space (thanks to Chad Bennett) so we do not have to worry about getting kicked out.

All sessions are free! Again hoopers are heartily welcomed (as is anyone else who wants to learn to spin and play with objects like poi, hoops, darts, staff, etc etc etc). There is plenty of space for everyone. No experience necessary.

***WHEN:
Here are the dates and times of the Monday evening poi/hoop/dart/staff/whatever else open jam classes:

Monday, January 21st 6:30 – 9:00
Monday, January 28th 7:00 – 9:00
Monday, February 4th 7:00 – 9:00
Monday, February 11th 6:30 – 9:00
Monday, February 18th – NO CLASS

***HOW (Directions):

*You can see exactly where the Sargent Activities Center on this online BU map:
http://www.bu.edu/maps/index.php

*By subway:

The nearest T stop is Boston University Central. This is on the B branch of the green subway line of the T.
*Please remember - only the B branch of the green line goes to this stop (the C, D and E branches of the green line do not).* So make sure there is a big B on the front of the green line subway car that you get on. Map of the T subway at http://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/

*Driving:

First off, print out the BU map above.

If you are driving, I would personally recommend to park at a spot with a parking meter; that way you know it is a legitimate spot. There are spots with meters on Commonwealth Avenue (which is also Route 20 if you’re looking at a map of Boston).
The meters in Boston are in effect until *8pm* and *only* accept quarters (1 quarter = 15 minutes, with a 2 hour max).
So bring plenty of quarters if you are driving, and use the print out of the BU map to walk to the Sargent Center.

Hooray - this will be fun!

Greetings fellow hoopers!

So I'm excited to say that I scored a gig performing at the Club BYTE in New York.
It's going to be my 1st time performing in that state and I want to make a good impression. They have requested that I bring a psi hoop. I was supposed to have gotten one for xmas but sadly the guy that I was dating, his car up and died on him so he had to buy a new one. Which means no glowy hoopy goodness for me. I'm hoping that one of you lovely ladies or gentlemen, would be willing to loan me one for the night.

The performance will be for April 13.
I do have a ride there and back with 2 of my girlfriends so I won't be on a bus.
My old hoop partner and I shared one, so I have used one before.
(Sadly she moved away to LA, otherwise I'd borrow that one)
I have friends with money but don't like borrowing money for unnecessary things.
If for some bizarre reason, something were to happen to the hoop(god, or whoever, forbid!)
I do have the means of replacing it. I understand that these are expensive pieces of equipment and would take the utmost care of it.

Please let me know if you'd be willing to lend me your shiny hoop for the evening.
I'd me Most appreciative.

You can either call: 401-952-0371
or e-mail Jinx637@gmail.com

Thank you, happy hooping and cheers!

Friends, hoopers, countrymen.
This is your chance to play a role in making Hoop History!

Starting February 2, I will be conducting an 8-week pilot study called "Efficacy of Selected Exercises on Hula Hoop Performance". As a certified personal fitness trainer and avid hooper, I want to investigate which movements have direct carryover into improvement of hoop performance.

This is the first study of its kind. It will be invaluable in helping the hoop community as a whole to understand our art form more fully, and take our skills to the next level. Established art forms and sports like ballet and football have all gone through this stage of trial-and-error during their development to discover what REALLY works where the rubber meets the road. Now is our time to figure out exactly what it takes to step up our game and take it to the next level, beyond the obvious "practice makes perfect".

I plan to publish the results in a few hoop and fitness websites and
publications, as well as use them to develop a hoop-specific workout
routine.

This is not for money, it's a labor of love.

REQUIREMENTS:
- You must be in New York City from Feb 2 - March 29, or be able to
come here at least three times during the length of the study to record
your hoop progress
- You must be a regular hooper with at least 1 year experience
- You must be able to commit to performing one exercise in a prescribed
manner on your own, 3 times per week, for 8 consecutive weeks starting Feb 2
(no special equipment will be required)
- You must agree to stick with whatever hoop AND exercise routine you've been doing,
for the entire 8 weeks. In other words, if you now hoop twice a week, do yoga once,
and lift weights once, you need to stick with that exact routine for the whole 8 weeks,
without changing it. This is the only way to isolate the potential variables.

Really, it's almost no work on your part, and you help make a great contribution
to the progression of our craft.

I'd love to get at least 100 study participants by Feb. 2.
Please email me at hoopstudy@gmail.com to participate!

Be awesome,
Ted Brancu

The movements of hooping are similar to the hip movements of the Cha Cha & they thought it would help loosen him up & have some fun. So we met Bryce & Jill, an MTV camera lady in this park south of Boston & we hooped it up one afternoon. It was really relaxed & natural & we had a good time. Bryce was so cute & we really had fun with him. We didn't know if any of the footage would actually make it on to the episode, so we just waited to hear from the producers. Unfortunately, they did not end up using any of the footage on the episode itself, but they put our clip online as part of the bonus features for the episode. The episode aired Saturday & the footage is online. It's just a short segment, but I thought I'd share it with you all anyways.

Anybody?

And also: I've slowly but surely been earning a name for myself as a performer in the RI, MA and CT area. I have been approached on many occasions about performing, to which I readily agree, but I am unsure as to what I should charge. I know that I'm certainly not a beginner but I'm also no where near the caliber of hoopers such as Anna or Christabel. I don't want to sell myself too short(which I believe that I have been doing) but I also don't feel that I'm worth an exorbitant amount either. How does one figure it out? What are the normal rates? Do you charge by the song? by the hour? a flat rate?

I just want to be fair to all parties involved, including myself as well as future employers.

Thank you!
